Among the classics, this is arguably the classic. Its ingeniously proportioned, unmistakable shape has made the height-adjustable table one of the most popular design icons of the 20th century. It is named after the house E 1027 'Maison en bord de mer' that Eileen Gray built for herself and her partner Jean Badovici. In this codename, the E stands for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the 10th letter of the alphabet), 2 for B(adovici) and 7 for G(ray). In the 1920s, Eileen Gray experimented with variants on her design for the Adjustable Table E 1027. Just as she transformed the look of the table with a black metal top as an alternative to the crystal glass top, she also chose black as the color for the frame. The matt black of the coating emphasizes the lines and form particularly clearly - a design which she found very elegant. In the 1970s, Eileen Gray and Zeev Aram developed their Adjustable Table E 1027 ready for production and initially opted for the chrome-plated version with Aram, with the understanding that the table with a black frame would be introduced at a later date.
