Born in the UK in 1984, Benjamin Hubert studied at Loughborough University and graduated in 2006 in Industrial Design and Technology; he founded his studio in 2007 in London, renamed a few years later to be known as Layer. The studio has worked on projects with brands such as Bang & Olufsen, Airbus, Panasonic and Moroso, and start-up Nolii. The studio specializes in materials driven, process led, industrial design across furniture and lighting sectors working with international manufacturers in Europe.

Hubert's pieces are designed largely for the interior of the home, domestic objects ranging from modular furniture for cats and tactile packaging to music speakers and sleek bar stools. 

In regards to his own practice, he regularly speaks on his passion for the design industries developments towards becoming a more sustainable practice, quoted here in an interview with Dezeen Magazine in 2021 "I think the thought leaders will lead and everyone else will follow," he said. "So it's about finding and engaging with the right people."
