An iconic Italian ceramics company known for its rich history, modern design evolution, and collaborations with renowned designers like Ettore Sottsass.
The Bitossi family has been documented in the Montelupo Fiorentino area since 1536.
In this place, with an ancient ceramic tradition just a few kilometres from the city of Florence, the Bitossi family has been kiln workers, sculptors, and painters, but above all, they have dedicated themselves to ceramics, introducing an extraordinary stylistic and formal renewal in the early decades of the twentieth century. Heir to a long dynasty and tradition, Guido Bitossi founded the Guido Bitossi Artistic Maioliche factory in 1921, offering a production still tied to tradition and the classical styles of the past, with refinement and study of the product. The evolution in a modern sense began disruptively in the early 1950s under the artistic direction of Aldo Londi, a man with an innate creative and aesthetic sense, attentive to changes in taste and the uniqueness of the Italian product. Londi entered Bitossi in 1946, and from that moment on, he was the undisputed protagonist of the production style for more than fifty years, first as a painter, then as artistic director and finally as a tireless experimenter. Over the years, many designers have experimented with the production of Manifattura Bitossi, giving life to new collections. The architect Ettore Sottsass, who began to frequent the Bitossi factory in 1955, experimented and created new modern ceramics. His collections opened a new chapter in the history of Italian design. Bitossi Ceramiche, still located today in the historic headquarters of 1929 and led by Ginevra Bocini, fourth generation of the Bitossi family, represents Italian excellence and Made in Italy around the world.
In 2014, the factory was registered in the Register of Historic Italian Companies established by the National Union of Chambers of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce. Today, Bitossi invests primarily in the research and design of designer ceramics and continues to interpret tradition by re-proposing iconic subjects by Aldo Londi. It is no coincidence that many of the external collaborators, architects, and designers are inspired by the techniques of the past documented in the Bitossi Museum Archive, in the incessant search for balance between know-how, innovation, and research. Over the last thirty years, many collaborations have been developed with Antonella Cimatti, Arik Levy, Benjamin Hubert, Cedric Ragot, Dimorestudio, Elma Lisowski Choung, Fabio Novembre, George J.
