Founder and president of New York Rockwell Group since 1984, David Rockwell is an accomplished American architect and designer, contributing his creative vision to a range of areas in the industry from restaurants, hotels, airport terminals, and hospitals, to festivals, museum exhibitions, and Broadway sets.
David Rockwell, of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA), has exhibited a longstanding interest in immersive environments. His upbringing in the theater, where his mother, a vaudeville dancer and choreographer, frequently cast him in community repertory productions, fostered this fascination. However, at the age of 12, David's family underwent a significant transition, relocating from Deal, New Jersey to Guadalajara, Mexico. This move exposed him to a plethora of dynamic marketplaces, bustling street life, and communal spaces, thereby introducing him to an entirely new realm of experience.
David, a trained architect from Syracuse University and the Architectural Association in London, has brought his artistic eye for color and spectacle, as well as his passion for theater, to his profession. David has received numerous accolades for his work, including the 2016 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design for the musical She Loves Me, as well as six Tony Award nominations for Best Scenic Design. He has also been awarded two Emmy Awards for production design for the Oscars (2021 and 2010), the AIA New York Chapter President's Award, the 2008 National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum for outstanding achievement in Interior Design, and the 2009 Pratt Legends Award. Additionally, he has been inducted into the James Beard Foundation Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America and Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame, and has been included in Architectural Digest’s AD 100.
Rockwell Group has been recognized as one of the most innovative design practices by Fast Company in their annual World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies issue in 2008, 2014, and 2015. In addition to his professional achievements, David is also committed to charitable organizations. He currently serves as Chair Emeritus of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) and as a board member of Citymeals on Wheels, New York Restoration Project, and the American Theatre Wing.
