Nestled in the Port Hills of Christchurch is Governors Bay Kitchen, a TIDA Imported Kitchen Design 2018 Award winner by Matisse. Located just outside the city center, Arclinea’s “Gamma” collection represents an organic aesthetic that reflects the property’s surrounding rugged bush and timber exterior.
This nature-inspired design also prioritizes function combined with a measured level of elegance.
Complimenting the brief, “Gamma” forms a seamless aesthetic of clean lines. Recessed handles are incorporated into the structure of the benchtop. Long cabinet drawers with wood cutlery inserts were chosen to maximise storage. Meanwhile, a generous use of horizontally grained timber has been used to accentuate the kitchen’s linear lines.
A contrasting soft matt black surface in defined areas on the island and back wall, help avoid a strictly symmetrical look. The “Armour” finish, in Nero from Arclinea, is tactile and warm and has the benefit of absorbing light.
LA Stainless steel on the back working bench and splashbacks adds practicality and an element of reflection and light to the overall design. Integrated appliances are camouflaged with A4 Nero Armour door finishes, including a dishwasher, steam oven, and warmer.
Governors’ Bay kitchen parallels nature’s main attributes: purpose and serenity. The contemporary fresh style of this space is grounded in its combinations of raw and refined textures. Lamps beneath the wall units emit a gentle glow at night, during the day the floor-to-ceiling glass windows stream light into the space calming the kitchen’s colour palette.
