Kensaku Oshiro is a Japanese designer known for his elegant, thoughtful, and versatile approach to furniture and product design. His work blends Japanese minimalism with European craftsmanship, resulting in designs that are both functional and deeply refined.
Born in Okinawa, Japan, in 1977, Kensaku Oshiro developed an early appreciation for design and craftsmanship. He pursued his education in industrial design at the Polytechnic School of Milan (Politecnico di Milano), one of Italy’s top institutions for design. His decision to study in Italy marked the beginning of a career that would integrate Japanese sensibilities with European design traditions.
After completing his studies, Oshiro worked at some of Italy’s most renowned design studios. From 2004 to 2012, he was part of Lissoni Associati, where he collaborated with Piero Lissoni on a variety of projects that strengthened his understanding of furniture, lighting, and interior design. In 2012, he joined Marcel Wanders Studio, further refining his ability to merge artistic expression with industrial functionality. In 2015, he established his own studio in Milan, where he continues to develop projects for some of the most prestigious international brands.
Throughout his career, Oshiro has worked with companies such as Baxter, Boffi, De Padova, Gan Rugs, Kristalia, and Poltrona Frau, among others. His designs are characterized by their clean lines, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep understanding of materials. Whether working with wood, metal, textiles, or composites, he carefully balances form and function, creating objects that feel both timeless and contemporary. His work is guided by an appreciation for subtlety, often allowing materials to speak for themselves while ensuring that every curve and joint is intentional.
Oshiro’s work has earned him several international awards, including the Red Dot Design Award, the Good Design Award, and the iF Design Award. His ability to harmonize simplicity, comfort, and innovation continues to make him a highly sought-after designer in the world of contemporary furniture.
