A table with a solid architectural structure that was an example of the new design language that Mario Bellini devised in the 1970s and examined in his Libro dell’Arredamento. In line with this approach, which was based on the primary functions of individual pieces of furniture, where each piece can be recast through a reinterpretation of its traditional form, depending on function, materials and finishes. La Rotonda is one of a series of tables designed in 1976, including La Corte, Il Colonnato, and La Loggia, all of them inspired by primary structures from classical architecture. The outcome was a number of solutions that respond to any need. These masterpieces underscore the close relationship that exists between furniture design and architecture, exemplified in this case in the use of supports such as pillars, all of which testify to Cassina’s peerless mastery in wood-working.
