Greek mythology often evokes an obscure world of fantasy, where the imagination is free to detach from logic. So it’s interesting to learn that Artemis, the goddess of hunting and forests, was also known as the goddess of the waxing moon and that her epithet Phoebe was a counterpart to the name of her twin brother Phoebus, or Apollo the sun god. Hence the inspiration for this project. The approach used to construct the upholstered chair Pheaby, designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso, presents as an unusual antagonism between artisanal design and industrial thought, which resolves itself in the pure structural efficiency of the components.
The legs, with feet rather more similar to a carpenter’s trestle than those of a chair, support a softly-rounded seat with no sharp edges. This is the waxing moon, shining through the foliage of the trees. It carries the force of an idea that uses the unexpected to give form and texture to comfort and ease of use.
Pheaby perfectly embodies the characteristics of its materials, revealing through versatility, subtlety and comfort the rational nature underlying the formal design choices. It comes with a solid wooden base, lacquered in the five colors chosen for the Rows collection: Honey, Cinnamon, Forest Green, Taupe and Coal Grey.
